Exploring an age old question: Can we demystify skin color?

Our understanding of European skin is already partially delineated: in 2005, our lab uncovered one of the most pervasive genetic mutations (SLC24A5) that contribute to the light color of European skin. Europeans also carry a 10 to 20-fold increase in melanoma susceptibility (one of the deadliest forms of skin cancer) when compared to Africans. Surprisingly, East Asians, unlike Europeans, carry a seemingly unusual protection against melanoma: their incidences of disease are similar to those of Africans, despite their relatively light skin color due to yet unknown genetic pathways. To understand this misnomer, the first step is to identify these East Asian-specific genetic mutations.

Elizabethtown Fair 2013

Annual E-town fair in Mid of August is our favourite time to hang out with friends and enjoy the beautiful summer. There are plenty of activities for both adults and the little ones- petting zoo, rides, games, contests etc. Local farmers also put their best homegrown veggies, fruits, animals in the contests judged by the public.

A tale of Lego…

Alyssa is already 19 months. As the days goes by, she is getting more agile and also getting in many things. However, one of the thing that we love to see is that she is getting more creative too.

We help her to build most of the ‘structure’ below but she choses what she want and the color to use. However, she still prefer the role of ‘destroyer’ after all the effort to built it.

National Aquarium, Baltimore

We spent a wonderful weekend at the National Aquarium, Baltimore. The National Aquarium was packed but we truly enjoyed ourselves! The aquarium was very well presented and the variety of species held our interest. We enjoyed the jelly fish exhibit but too bad that we missed the highlight, dolphin show Sad smile It’s a joy to see how much our 18 months old daughter enjoyed looking at the fish. She almost sticked her face on the glass and she wouldn’t blink! Niagara Falls State Park

Six hours car ride (with a fussy toddler on board!) is paid off when I see the Niagara Falls flows. Pictures are great, but seeing it with my own eyes and experiencing the powerful force is simply awesome!
