Picture of the week

This morning, as I check my mail, I realise I have 3 mails in my mailbox. One of the mails entitle, "Picture of the week competition", caught my eyes, all for the wrong reason. First thought that came to my mind was, this is just another spam mail. Occasionally I received spam mails in my inbox, though most of the time, it will be filtered into Spam mail folders which I will just delete it without going through the content. However, I read this email, and saw my name. I was surprise and I continue reading it.

Then, I realise, this is not a spam mail but Mrs Michelle Freedman from Newsweek Asia emailed me to inform me about my winning picture. I had actually forgotten about the competition I took part in about a month ago. Anyway, at that time, it was just for fun since I have many pics in my folder. I never imagine I could win, though down inside, I hope I could. I guess, God always has little surprises for us when we don't expect it and this always makes our day better. Anyway, thanks Newsweek Asia. I am waiting for the USB memory stick to arrive (I am still not sure what I won). Here, take a look at the winning shot.

Lorong kulit @ Penang

Well, continue from the previous post about my trip to Penang, I want to share with you this interesting place that I have let you know about, a place where bargaining are for the pros and shopping are for those who just simply feel like buying 'something'...anything.. indeed this place is like 'you get what you want' or 'you ask for it, you get it'. Don't believe it? check it out at the pics below;

Sometimes, I wonder who needs all this junks? if you were to look at it carefully, you can find amazing stuff like 'one lever plyer'... common...who using this stuff? how can you operate it when its broken? or you can find an extension cord with three points but only one working! Heeeellllooooo????
And here is the fan. can you check if this is working? the old phone too. I mean, unless you are a junk collector, you will but it, if not, why you buy it here when you can go to the shop, Sheng Heng or Courts Mammoth and get a brand new fan, pay a bit extra, and people will fix it up for you and you have the ASSURANCE that it's working...

tools....
You also can find people selling groceries here. Every where you go in Malaysia, you can find people selling cigarette. We launched the Tak Nak (Don't want) campaign against smoking, but we went on promoting the sales of it thru mamak stalls, street peddler, coffee shops and many more places. And now the cigarettes are coming in smaller boxes. Then, they say this campaign failed.. common...

Then, we have people selling fruits too....

and keropok and kerepek....

but the coolest is this... check it out...

No, not the guy... but his stall. But he has one of the coolest hair or maybe little hair la...But his stall MF. Suci Enterprise sells a lot of antics which catch my attention.

Once I saw the fan, my eyes was stuck at this little stall. They have this amazing fan that is still working. Then, I saw the phone. . There are two in the pics, look carefully.... Where else can you find this type of phones. Now people carry hand phone liao ma. To my surprise, this phone is still working, at least this is what he claims. Anyway, I know one of my uncle who bought a phone like the model besides the fan, and its WORKING at his house. Amazing.
Scouting around his stall, I found this corner...lying there, he has the old iron, abacus (which I once used as a skateboard), door knock, padlock and even the Penang Bridge run medals.
Amazing huh...Man... I enjoy visiting this place. However, I must caution you this. Do bargain. If not, you will meet the cut throat hawker. And be careful, not to buy stolen goods. This place is haven for them...but above all, enjoy the place, the people, the energy and all the shouting and yelling that you listen as you walk.
Lorong Kulit (Behind the Penang stadium),
Georgetown. Penang.

Evolution Vs Creation

I was asked by my supervisor to teach a class. Title: Human evolution. I get students from the Faculty of Allied Sciences and me myself from Faculty of Science and Technology... who are these students ???

err....How am I suppose to teach this class when I, Me, myself don't believe in evolution. Yes, I am a geneticist, earning my PhD with my hard work and sweat, BUT, NO I don't believe in evolution. Sometimes I find myself in a hard situation when people ask me about my faith and science. I believe in creation by the God Almighty.

Common...let me be frank. You want to believe you come from ancestor who is an ape or believe that God so love us that HE created us in His own image. I want to believe the latter.

Maybe new evolution will take over now...

too much of food. from the previous trip back to Pg

or maybe cause by PC evolution to make us smaller and making Bill Gates pocket larger

Incidentally, Bill Gates is no longer the richest man in the world now. Carlos Slim from Mexico had taken over. He is not that Slim isn't he?

Well, let see what will happen this coming Thursday when I turn the lesson into Human Migration.

Penang trip

I went back to Penang last week for leisure and work. After a few stops along the ever congested highway, I arrived Penang around 3pm. First sight that greats me at the Penang bridge, is the welcoming Penang jam. Traffic was bumper to bumper. Imagine, it took us 45 mins to cross the bridge. I know, I am back!
The Penang bridge welcoming party

First thing we did (Aylwin, Li-Ann, Chih Wei, Mee Siing and myself), we head straight to the Swatow lane for lunch. Aylwin and the rest arrive earlier while Mee Siing and myself arrive later.
Swatow lane Ice kacang with fruits. Yummy!

Kimberley Street Char Keow Teow with mantis prawn. heavenly!

Had a good time eating and chatting and at the same time, planning how to spend the next three days in Penang with them. I stay much longer, for 9 days. 3 days in Penang, took us food hunting everywhere, from Penang island to Batu Kawan in Butterworth for food. Every body have their own '5 cents worth' which stall sells nicer 'char keow teow', so, we took more than 5 times of 'char keow teow'. Our very own famous blogger from Kuching, Kenny, once try to have his Penang Food guide.

We went for movie too.. Die Hard 4. Great movie but a lot of unrealistic move by Bruce Willis. All of us enjoy it so much.

However, the trip to Penang is not all play and no work. I have to work from Monday to Friday in Kepala Batas. Waking up at 615am to leave for Kepala Batas Mardi is the killer of the trip. We have to leave by 645am simply just to avoid the madness jam.

The scarecrow to that greats us every morning. Doesn't it look like its directing the birds to the paddy field???

While in Penang, I took the time to visit the Lorong Kulit. If you have not been to this place, and you are an 'junk @ antics' lovers, this is a must visit place. If you like anything at all, this place is a must. You can get anything from under the sky, food, hand phone & accesories, fruits, groceries, clothings, antics, second hand magazine and etc. You name it, you can find it. You can even find people selling aphrodiasic with funny 'action'. His tag line

Once you take it, it goes zoinneee...

???? Can't brings you any pics though. sorry

You can even find the stering wheel in Lorong Kulit. Simply amazing.

Opens saturday and sunday in the morning till noon

I will brings you more updates about the trip to Penang soon.

Wedding Ring Pillow

As the date draws nearer, people i meet have this question in their mouth...

Q: So, how is your wedding preparation?
A: OK-lah. a lot more to settle and do.
Q: Why always the same answer one?
A: Ya-lah. still got a lot-mah.
Sometimes, we felt, people around us are more excited then we are. they are more concern about our wedding. Not that we are complaining that they care, they help us to be more excited! but when the only question the ask is how is your wedding preparation everytime they meet us, and from nearly everyone who meet us, we sounded like tape recorder answering pre-recorded questions.

Its just like the Chinese culture when they meet somebody, anytime, they will ask chiak pa boey? (literally translated into English, Have you eaten?) HELLO !!! ????

11am, to early for lunch, to late for breakfast.
2pm, to late for lunch,
4pm, same question, not relevant anymore.
9pm, again, late for dinner but still acceptable,
12am, what am I suppose to answer to this question? which meal do you mean? I took breakfast, lunch, dinner, but nope, I have not taken supper?

duh?!!!

And now, our wedding is in November. They ask us how is your wedding preparation? Obviously, there are lots more to settle. Not that we are having a grand wedding but, there must be lots to settle before we can says, almost done. People ask, why are you taking such a long time to plan, ONE year? hello, its wedding!

We need to confirm the venue, the guest, have marriage counseling, get the right Person-in-Charge (if not the wedding will be K.O), ask our family members, take pictureSSSsssss ( we took more then 180 pics), select our gown, buy our rings, get ourselves register two weeks before the church wedding and more. ETC.

Anyway, we thanks all those who are concern about us and getting this wedding ready. A lot of them, offer their helps and give us a lot of advice too. We thank you. And Yes, we appreciate your concern. And Yes, we want all those question coming, but maybe, you can ask us more then our wedding ceremony. or maybe, you can ask us question like,

So, how can I help you?
Do you have anything you want to me to do?

Anyway, here are some updates. We went to Parkson yesterday and we found this ring pillow. Its lovely. At fist we wanted to make ourselves the pillow, but when we saw this in Parkson, its just so nice. We love the bear and we give in to the temptation.. hahahah. we spend RM19.90 for this. love it. We will be adding a ribbon to it for the ring.

Lovely...

Alluring charm of the bear...
More updates to come...stay tune....

to LAH or not to LAH

Lately the STAR newspaper has been running the articles about what malaysian is to you? I have been following this column in Star 2 for the pass one week. its amazing to read about what the younger generation (not that I am old, I am just 2 years above the age limit) write about being Malaysian.

I have been growing up in this part of the world for the past 27 years..and when you ask me, you like Malaysia or not, I CAN'T tell you!!!Yes, I like it here because of the multi culture, multi racial community that we live, we have a lot of food for me to samples, can understand and communicate in at least 3 different languages, live in the country once boast to have the highest building in the world (now is still the highest twin tower in the world, KLCC) and even have food round the clock without me having to worry I can go hungry ans stuff to die....but NO, I dont like it here because, I dont like the wheater, the sensorship that we have here, in order that we can live in harmony (I guess we have a price to pay for everthing) and again...I can't write it here because its sensitive. Nevertheless, its a beautiful country to live in.

One thing about Malaysian, its the -lah attitude that we have. Malaysia are so easy to recognise when I travel simply because when we talk, we have the '-lah' suffix to our sentences.

Me: Hi, nice meeting you. By the way, where are you from?

A: Malaysia-lah

Me: I see. No wonder-lah. I see you talk like this, I also guess-lah you are from Malaysia.

A: Ya-lah. Me also-mah.

and this "-lah" conversation can go on and on...

Malaysia use lah more than what we think it is. Its not just s simple addition to our already multi language, multi culture and multi race society (as if, mastering 3 language is easy), but Malaysian use this lah suffix to emphasis their sentences. Malaysiana publish an articles about the application of lah

(Source:All Malaysian.info)

Most of us never realise that we use this suffix in our conversation but we all used it-lah.

What to do...since we live in a place where we have Pak.... :)
